Indie MMORPGs used to be a punchline: a Kickstarter, a trailer, a decade of "alpha". The ones that actually exist in 2026 have something in common, and it is not a publisher. Most of them run in a browser, because that is the only way a small team can put a persistent world in front of people without a download bar standing between them.

This is a list of the independent MMORPGs you can play today, not the ones you can back. We make one of them, and say so where it comes up.

Why indie MMOs live in the browser

An installed MMORPG needs a client for every platform, an installer players trust, a patcher, and the marketing budget to convince someone to download a gigabyte from a studio they have never heard of. A browser MMORPG needs a URL. One build runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS the day it ships, and the first hour costs the player nothing but a tab. For a team of a few people that is not a preference, it is the whole business plan.

The list

Mirage Online Classic

The most complete independent browser MMORPG running: eleven classes, a large quest list, guilds, dungeons, a skill system that by its own count passes twenty skills, and no membership tier. 2D and sprite-based by design. Honest about: its era. It looks like the early-2000s games it is modelled on, and wears that proudly.

Duskmere

Ours. A free 3D MMORPG in a browser, built on a custom TypeScript and WebGL engine rather than Unity or Unreal, with ten RuneScape-style skills, a player-run Grand Exchange, five-player parties, a five-player dungeon, sea voyages and a hand-built world from level 1 to 65 so far. WASD movement. Honest about: being new. It opened in July 2026, the population is small, the character cap is 90 and the regions above 65 are still being built. Everything on the what is Duskmere page is in the game today; nothing on it is a promise.

Veilbound

A 3D browser MMORPG that launched in June 2026 with eleven classes, twenty zones, hundreds of quests, twelve instanced dungeons, guilds, parties, PvP duels and pets, by its own description with World of Warcraft and RuneScape in its DNA. Playable in about ten seconds from its site. Honest about: the same things we are. New, and growing in public.

stein.world

A 2D pixel-art MMORPG with a long quest list, crafting, dungeons and wave dungeons, groups of up to five, no strict class system, and a browser client that runs on a phone as well as a laptop. Honest about: its shop, which it describes as fair pay-to-skip and states does not sell better equipment.

Hordes.io

A 3D WebGL MMORPG built around a two-faction war, with a persistent open world and years of running smoothly in a browser tab. Honest about: its focus. It is a fight, not a farm; questing and crafting are not why you are there.

Titans of Time

A 3D browser MMORPG from a studio that has kept it running since 2014, which in indie MMO terms is a lifetime. Its site says little beyond that, so we will not either. Honest about: nothing much, because it barely markets itself at all.

Ultimate Dominion

A text-based MMO, the oldest form of the genre, built in the open by a small team that publishes its own launch data. Not a browser 3D game and not trying to be. Honest about: everything; their blog is one of the more candid indie MMO diaries around.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best indie MMORPGs in 2026?
The ones you can actually play: Mirage Online Classic (2D, the most complete browser MMORPG), Duskmere (3D skilling and economy in a browser), Veilbound (3D, class-based, new in 2026), stein.world (2D pixel, cosy), Hordes.io (3D faction PvP) and Ultimate Dominion (a text MMO). Titans of Time is a 3D browser MMORPG that has run since 2014. Each is built by a small team without a publisher.
Why are so many indie MMORPGs browser games?
Because the browser removes the two things a small team cannot afford: a download that players have to be convinced to install, and a client for every platform. A browser game is one build that runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS the day it ships.
Is Duskmere an indie MMORPG?
Yes. Duskmere is built by a small independent team on an engine they wrote themselves, opened to players in July 2026, has no publisher and sells nothing. It is developed in the open with a community on Discord that has a real say in what comes next.
Are indie MMORPGs still being updated?
The ones on this list are. Duskmere and Mirage both publish devblogs and patch notes; Veilbound launched in June 2026; stein.world posts versioned updates. An MMORPG that has stopped updating is on its way out, so check the news page before you invest a month.

Duskmere is a free browser MMORPG with nothing to download. The world is live right now.
