Crafting in most MMORPGs is a side activity: a menu you visit to turn drops into slightly worse versions of the gear you already have. In the RuneScape tradition it is the game. Skills take real time, what one skill makes another needs, and a player market turns that dependency into an economy.

Duskmere is built in that tradition, in 3D, in a browser. This page explains how the loop works, and then lists the other browser MMORPGs where crafting is more than a menu.

The loop

Ten skills. Three gather, four make, one improves, one cooks, and one fights:

Gathering Feeds Made at
Woodcutting (logs) Firemaking, and the Grand Exchange constantly Any tree
Mining (ore) Smithing Any vein
Fishing (raw fish) Cooking Marked water
Production Station What comes out
Smithing Forge, then anvil Bars from ore; seventeen recipes for the full bronze kit, iron from level 10, duskiron from level 30
Tailoring Loom Twenty-one recipes from leather, silk and wolf leather: the light-armour set
Alchemy Lab Six combat potions, all unlocked within the first ten levels
Cooking Fire Food, which is how you survive a fight you slightly misjudged

Then two things happen to what you made:

  • It rolls a rarity. Every piece of gear, crafted or dropped, lands on one of five tiers with real stat differences. A common base and a legendary base are not the same item.
  • It can be enchanted. Enchanting pushes gear to +8. The first ranks are guaranteed; the last are a gamble, and anyone who lands +7 or better is announced to the whole server.

Why the economy is the point

None of these skills are independent, and that is deliberate. Logs are the most reliably in-demand raw material in the game because two skills burn through them. Ore is worth coin because someone else's Smithing needs it. The Grand Exchange is where the skills you do not train become the skills you buy from:

  • Listing an item hands it to the exchange, so it can never be in two places at once.
  • Sales complete while you are offline; the coin waits in a collection box.
  • A small posting fee and a cut on sales leave the world for good, which is what stops prices spiralling the way they do where gold only piles up.
  • Nothing can be bought into the economy from outside, because there is no shop.

The skills guide covers each of the ten in detail and which to train first.

Game Skills and crafting Player market Note
Mirage Online Classic States more than twenty skills, including mining, woodcutting, forging, weaving, enchanting Yes, player economy 2D; the deepest skill list in the browser
Duskmere Ten skills, four stations, rarity rolls, enchanting to +8 Grand Exchange Ours. 3D, WASD, new and small.
stein.world Crafting with mining, herbalism, tailoring among others Trading between players 2D pixel, cosy pace

Hordes.io Little to none Not the focus Built for faction PvP

If crafting is what you play for and you do not mind 2D, Mirage's skill list is the largest here. If you want the skilling loop in 3D with direct movement and nothing to install, that is what Duskmere is for.

Frequently asked questions

Does Duskmere have crafting?
Yes. Smithing at a forge and anvil, Tailoring at a loom, Alchemy at a lab, and Cooking over a fire, fed by Woodcutting, Mining, Fishing and Firemaking. Gear rolls one of five rarity tiers when crafted and can be enchanted up to +8.
How many skills does Duskmere have?
Ten: Woodcutting, Mining, Smithing, Fishing, Firemaking, Cooking, Tailoring, Alchemy, Enchanting and Character, the combat level. The nine non-combat skills cap at 99; Character caps at 90.
Can you sell crafted items to other players in Duskmere?
Yes, on the Grand Exchange, a player-run market where listings run for seven days, sales complete while you are offline, and a small fee on each sale takes coin out of the economy for good.
Which browser MMORPGs have crafting and trade skills?
Duskmere (ten skills, four stations), Mirage Online Classic (states more than twenty skills including mining, forging and weaving), stein.world (mining, herbalism and tailoring among others) and Old School RuneScape (twenty-three skills, though it needs a desktop client now). Hordes.io and most action-focused browser games have little or no crafting.

Duskmere is a free browser MMORPG with nothing to download. The world is live right now.
