For a lot of people AdventureQuest Worlds was the first MMORPG: free, in a browser, on the family computer, with a new release every Friday. Then Flash ended, and the game that lived in a tab moved mostly into a launcher.
If you want that feeling back, a free fantasy MMORPG you open in a tab, this is the honest list of what comes closest in 2026. We make one of the games on it and say so.
Where AQW is now
AQW was built in Flash, which Adobe ended in 2021. Artix's site still describes AQW as a browser game with nothing to install and free to play, browser play has been coming back through Ruffle (a Flash emulator written in JavaScript), and the Artix Games Launcher is the route the site puts front and centre. It is still updated, still has fifteen years of content, and still has a membership and AdventureCoins. Check aq.com for the current state before you plan around it, because it changes.
There is also AQ3D, Artix's own 3D game in the same universe, on desktop and mobile. It is a separate game rather than a way to play AQW.
What "like AQW" means
Most people mean four things: free, fantasy, always online with other players, and playable in a tab with no install. Some also mean classes you swap between, a pet that follows you, and a stream of new content. The games below are sorted by how many of those they keep.
The list
Veilbound: the class-based one, in 3D
A 3D browser MMORPG launched in June 2026 with eleven classes, twenty zones, hundreds of quests, twelve instanced dungeons, guilds, PvP duels and pets, playable from its site in about ten seconds. Keeps: classes, quests, pets, the tab. Changes: it is 3D and new, so the content library is a fraction of AQW's fifteen years.
Mirage Online Classic: the class-based one, in 2D
Eleven classes, a large quest list, guilds, dungeons, cosmetic companion pets and no membership tier, in a 2D top-down browser game modelled on the early-2000s MMOs. Keeps: classes, quests, pets, the tab, and it is the most complete browser MMORPG running. Changes: top-down sprites rather than AQW's side-on art.
Duskmere: the skilling one, in 3D
Ours. A free 3D MMORPG in a browser with no download, quests, a talent tree across Warrior, Mage and Priest, a magpie companion, five-player dungeons and a player-run Grand Exchange. Keeps: free, fantasy, always online, in a tab, a pet, a talent tree instead of a class list, and nothing at all for sale. Changes: progression is ten RuneScape-style skills rather than classes, and you move with WASD. It opened in July 2026, so it is new and small, and it says so.
stein.world: the cosy one
A 2D pixel MMORPG with a long quest list, crafting, group dungeons and no strict class system, in a browser on phone or laptop. Keeps: free, quests, the tab, phones. Changes: gentler pace, modest presentation.
AQ3D: Artix's own 3D
The same universe and the same studio, in 3D, cross-platform between desktop and mobile. Keeps: the world, the humour, the Friday cadence. Changes: it is an installed app, not a tab, and a separate game from AQW.

How to choose
- "I want AQW with the Flash problem solved." Veilbound in 3D, or Mirage in 2D.
- "I want the world and the jokes." AQ3D, and accept the install.
- "I want free and in a tab, and I have grown into skilling." Duskmere, and read the WASD warning in the beginner's guide first.
- "I want to play on my phone." stein.world.
