Saddle Up

🐴  8 September 2026

A new rider on a bay horse outside Northgate Stables, an airship passing overhead

Eight days, fifty-odd changes, and nearly every one of them something you will feel the moment you log in. Let's start with the one you can ride.

Your own horse at level 20

Reach level 20 and a banner will tell you what you've earned: a horse. A new quest, Saddle Up, sends you to the Stable master at Northgate Stables, where 1,000 coins buys a permanent bay riding horse that is yours for good. It moves at one and a half times walking speed and it never expires. The old rental nags are off the market; if you were already past 20, the banner is waiting on your next login.

Mounting is a click on a new utility tile above your XP bar. The horse itself was rebuilt with real bulk, a proper barrel and a thick neck. It looks like something that could actually carry you, because it can.

Death keeps your kit

The gravestone rule from July is retired on every map. When you die, you keep everything: worn gear, backpack, coins, the lot. Only your potion timers clear. You wake beside the nearest lodestone, a new kind of standing stone raised in each of the nine mainland zones, next to the inn or the landmark. They show on your minimap, so you always know where you'll come back.

Losing a fight still costs you the walk. It no longer costs you the afternoon.

Rest anywhere

Press X and your character sits down where they stand. Health and mana come back in three tiers: a trickle in combat, 5% every five seconds once you've gone eight seconds without a blow, and 10% every five seconds while resting. No bench required.

The Wayfarer's Charm

Every character now carries a Wayfarer's Charm, bound to you and always in hand. It starts cold: finish the first quest and walk into Lightshire and it wakes. From then on it carries you home to the Lightshire lodestone from anywhere in the world, on a 30-minute cooldown. Older characters already have one in their pack.

The Heartlands come alive

The gentle country below the mountains had scenery and not much else. Now:

  • Five farmsteads: Millholding by the windmill, a Crossroads hamlet with a village pond, the Warden's Croft under Watch Hill, Stonefold and Nan Hollow's cottage, with ten villagers cutting wood, fishing and walking the lanes.
  • Livestock: 20 sheep, 11 cows and 12 chickens, all new models, all dropping meat (six new cuts). The shepherd finally has a flock.
  • Threats on the edges: grey wolves, a new boar (meat and tusks), and a highwaymen's camp signposted off the south road.
  • Things to gather: 16 copper and tin veins on the highland edge and six river fishing spots, plus new Heartlands bounties on the board.
  • Hedgerows along every road, eighteen copses and meadow drifts.

The cows are Holsteins. We are not sure how they got here either.

The first quest goes to sea

New players used to land on the island beach with no objective, then wait a full minute beside an orb for something to happen. A Wizardly Introduction now runs fifteen stages from the wizard's door across the voyage, the wreck, the tracks on the sand and the orb, with a helper line and a distance at every step. Finishing it hands over a starter kit: bronze pickaxe, leather tunic, chaps and boots, and enough bread and shrimp to survive your first mistakes. Brand-new accounts also get an illustrated welcome and character creation right after it.

Turn with A and D

A and D now turn you and swing the camera with you; Q and E strafe. If you'd rather have it the old way, every movement and action key is rebindable under Esc, Controls, and your binds travel with your account. There's an invert-horizontal camera option beside the vertical one, too.

A brighter, lighter world

The atmospheric fog is gone: you see the far tree line and the mountain behind it instead of a grey wall. Mirkwood is about 40% brighter on the forest floor, still dark, no longer murky. The mountains were resculpted to lose their needle-thin ridges, the Peaks of Elir dropping from over 1,700 one-tile spikes to about 650 real crests, without changing a single tile you could reach before.

Every world object was rebuilt, all 227 kinds, and so were all 50 character, creature and mount models with their 198 animations. Dialogue portraits now move their lips instead of stretching a box over the mouth. And the bug where the whole world vanished with shadows on for some graphics cards is fixed.

Five times faster in the forest

Mirkwood was the heaviest place in the game: nearly 13 million triangles in view at the spawn. It's now about 2.6 million, with nothing visibly removed. Ground cover only draws in the band around you and distant trees collapse into cheaper stand-ins.

Crossing between maps used to freeze for nearly a second; it's now around 50 milliseconds, because the new terrain is built on a background thread while you keep playing. The network layer was replaced too: the server sends only what you can actually see, ping under load dropped from about 35 to 13 milliseconds, and a dropped connection keeps your seat for 30 seconds, so a wifi blip no longer means a re-login.

Also in this update

  • Your backpack is now kept by the server. A grave full of frogs' legs you never had, or a shop refusing coins your purse showed, can't happen again.
  • Quest targets show on the minimap and the world chart, you can track up to three quests, and the journal shows struck stages, rewards and where to start.
  • The world map on this website is rendered from the live game on every update, so it can never drift from the in-game chart again.
  • Brand-new characters spawn at full health and mana instead of a sliver of each (sorry).
  • Ten combat fixes, including a killing blow that could be overwritten by the hit before it, and a party boss wearing two health bars.
  • The Discord reward login works again for everyone.
  • Duskmere is in beta and changes daily. You'll see a notice saying so on your next login, with a Discord link. Come and tell us what broke. Then go and buy a horse.
